Sydney has a tourist food problem. The sit-down restaurants on the harbour are $35 a main, the cafes near the Opera House charge $7 for a flat white, and the rooftop bars want $25 for a cocktail before tax. None of it is what locals actually eat.
Here's where to eat well in Sydney for under $20 a meal.
Spice Alley. 18 to 20 Kensington Street, Chippendale. A covered laneway of six Asian food stalls under yellow lanterns, $14 to $18 a bowl, cash and card both. Through 2026 they're running $10 dishes on a rotating menu to mark their tenth anniversary, which is the best deal in the city right now.
Marrickville Pork Roll. Original at 236A Illawarra Road, Marrickville, with newer outposts at Darling Square (Haymarket) and Circular Quay. The banh mi everyone in Sydney has a strong opinion about. $9. Cash only at the Marrickville location, queue out the door at lunch, worth it.
Mamak. 15 Goulburn Street, Haymarket. Malaysian roti and curry. Around $15 a plate, made fresh, no bookings, queue moves quickly. The roti canai is what they're known for.
Chat Thai. Multiple locations including the original at 20 Campbell Street, Thaitown. Around $20 a meal that any Thai person you ask will say is the real deal. Open late.
Chinatown food courts. Eating World on Dixon Street and Sussex Centre on Sussex Street. Pick a stall with locals queuing. $12 to $16 for a full meal. Better than half the sit-down restaurants in the area.
Coles and Woolworths after 7pm. Nobody mentions this in food guides but it's the cheat code. Both supermarkets discount fresh food (bread, sushi, ready meals, salads) by 30 to 50% in the last hour. A $25 sushi platter for $11 is normal.
Korean BBQ in Strathfield. A train ride out, but $25 a person for all-you-can-eat at most spots. Easily a $60 experience anywhere else in the city.
Neighbourhood pubs. Counter meals at Sydney pubs run $18 to $22 for a steak or schnitzel and chips. Not glamorous but consistently the best value sit-down food in the city.
The pattern is the same every time: the further you walk from the tourist strips, the better the food and the lower the price. By the way, our four pod hotels include breakfast AND dinner every night, which is mostly why we ended up writing this list with prices on it. Either way, walk inland.
